ndian Summer is long and legendery. A time when sun bakes every nook and corner. Everything becomes dry and lifeless to an extent that nothing seems to have the
capacity to change this unending landscape. India
desperately needs the magical touch of monsoon rains. And when it rains after a long wait India responds.
Monsoon is life. Swollen rivers fill the plains. Flooded plains bear bounty crops. Mating season begins in jungles that just turned green. The sounds of peacock calls fill the air and the scene of joyously jumping Indian Saras is a treat to watch. Children playing in freshly filled ponds is most common scene. It is time for everyone to live; nothing is at odds in this time.
Monsoon means celebrations. The word Sawan (The first month of Monsoon) means much more to Indians than being just a period in a year. It is the most celebrated month of India. Uncountable festivals begin everywhere many of them are very typical and unique to some village or town. The idea of celebrations also differ everywhere. Picnicking is most popular. Songs on monsoons are uncountable and everyone seems to know the
perfect way of rendition.
Monsoon speaks passion. An overwhelming majority of Indias classical musical notes are based on
monsoon ragas. Poets have written a lot on monsoon magic. Monsoon symbolizes love and eroticism,
folklores say a lot on these. Indian cinema uses monsoon visuals to suggest beauty, love and seduction. Monsoon sets the mood and rest is the work of art.
Monsoon is magical. Just everything comes to life in the first spell of monsoon itself. It is said in Hindi that a person blinded during monsoons remembers only color green. The magic touch doesnt spare any part of India barring a few areas of upper Himalayas like
Ladakh, Lahaul and Spiti. Nothing remains unaffected of its spell, the sweep of monsoon over India is complete.
