1: Morning at 9 at the gates of Churchgate railway station: Mumbai’s millions heads roll out of every halting train
that brings in yet another flock of Karmyogis from as far as Surat and Pune to uncountable commercial establishments of South Mumbai.
The sea of humanity surging in all directions out of the station seems very much like an army operation- massive
yet disciplined and unchaotic. It is often said- Reach Mumbai in the morning, get a job by noon. And why not! Nothing goes slow in Mumbai.
It is a real fast paced city, so fast that if you can’t walk along, you’ll be stumped over!
Scene 2: 11 O’Clock at Bhuleshwar: Mumbai’s Little India- crowded, colorful, exotic and labyrinthine. Narrow streets are full of pavement vendors, cows, flower sellers, hand-drawn
carts, small streetside shrines of Ganpathy and Goddess Laxmi. It is the time of brisk market activity. Everyone, from wholesale garment dealer to mithaiwallah and paanwallah make this bazaar busy. This busy bazaar scene extends very far to
chor bazaar and beyond to the North (Mumbai’s famous Dhobi Talao also located there) and to the unique
Ccrawford market to the south.
Scene
3: Lunchtime at Tajmahal hotel: The scene at this one of India’s classiest hotels is that of style and richness. Mumbai’s rich and famous find this place as the most prestigious to treat their business delegates and guests. But it is certainly not a place of economic apartheid. Just outside is the “Gateway of India’ – a place for all. Jetties for
Elephanta caves go from here.
Scene 4: Post lunch at Jehangir Art Gallery: ‘The art gallery is
completely booked for next two years, artists may book space for the
period thereon’ is the notice that is quite often put outside. It
definitely proves that it is the most prestigious venue for the most r efined Indian artists. This also proves that Mumbaikars are great patrons
of fine arts. Infact, the people of Mumbai pursue a wide ranging
interests- from race course to yacht club to performing arts. Impressive
colonial period monuments all around this gallery like Prince of Wales
museum, High Court, Rajabhai tower, etc reflect care about the heritage
too.
Scene 5: E vening at Juhu Beach: A virtual carnival. Mumbaikars exhausted after day’s work find this place
perfect to unwind and rejuvenate. Mouthwatering snacks, camel rides, horse rides, toys, coconut water, music, sea, sand and a whole family affair- need they ask for more. Rich and poor share the same platform; from bollywood cinestar to an ordinary laborer can be found here. This is a unique character of Mumbai, the only city where slums and posh bungalows exist
adjacent to each other. One is never too far from reality.
Scene 6: At 2 AM at Juhu: Stream of cars zoom over flashy roads. Night clubs, discotheques and pubs are jam-packed with their frenzied patrons. Rich and famous, bold and beautiful, young and not so young make a beeline. Grand receptions at five star hotels host most glamorous guests from
Indian showbiz industry (Bollywood). The parties go on often till morning hours.
Glamour and glitz is part of
Mumbai’s famous nightlife.
Scene 7: Morning at five at Marine Drive: Mumbaikars from all walks of life find this perfectly curved stretch of sea face most alluring.
Morning walks, jogging, aerobics, yoga should be an absolute fun while watching fishermen bringing the day’s catch. Yet another day starts in Mumbai- fine tuned, fast-paced and fun-filled. The days in Mumbai that never end.
